Artificial Intelligence and Generative Technologies Policy

The International Quarterly of Foreign Relations recognizes that artificial intelligence technologies may assist researchers in preparing manuscripts. However, authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of all submitted work.

Artificial intelligence systems, including generative AI tools, may be used only for limited purposes such as:

  • language editing;
  • grammar correction;
  • improving readability;
  • formatting references.

Artificial intelligence systems may not:

  • be listed as authors;
  • generate research findings without verification;
  • replace human scholarly judgment;
  • assume responsibility for the content of the manuscript.

Authors must disclose any substantial use of artificial intelligence in the preparation of the manuscript in a dedicated statement.

For example:

The authors used generative AI technology solely for language editing and manuscript preparation. All arguments, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions remain the responsibility of the authors.

The journal reserves the right to request additional information regarding the use of artificial intelligence during the review process.
