The geopolitical transformations in the West Asian region since 1978 have led to the emergence of numerous security, political, and geopolitical crises that have influenced the behavior of major powers, including the People’s Republic of China. This study aims to identify and explain China’s behavioral patterns in responding to crises in West Asia related to the Islamic Republic of Iran during the period from 1978 to 2023. The main research question is: What have been the dominant patterns of China’s foreign policy behavior toward regional crises in West Asia related to Iran, and according to what logic and framework can these behaviors be explained? Employing a case study approach within a historical analysis framework, this study examines 14 major regional and international crises related to the Islamic Republic of Iran that have had a profound impact on the country’s relations and interactions. The research data were collected from library sources, official documents, international reports, and scholarly studies. Subsequently, China’s behavioral patterns in each crisis were identified and categorized. The findings indicate that the most significant behavioral pattern of the People’s Republic of China toward crises in West Asia has been “balanced action and geopolitical balancing.” Other persistent components of China’s foreign policy in West Asia include prioritizing national and strategic interests, avoiding direct confrontation with actors involved in crises, strategic prudence, active neutrality, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, diplomatic mediation, and maintaining simultaneous relations with Iran and other regional actors. The findings demonstrate that China’s foreign policy behavior in West Asia, particularly in relation to Iran, has been based less on ideological alliances and more on strategic rationality, balanced engagement, and economic pragmatism.
